What is Kush Cannabis? Types and Effects

Kush-Sorte | Was sagt die Forschung?

Due to the large selection of different cannabis varieties, it is sometimes difficult to keep your bearings and find suitable preparations for your own treatment goals. One of the most common names that comes up frequently is the Kush cannabis strain. In this article, we'll explain what Kush cannabis is, what variations exist, and whether they are suitable for your personal cannabis therapy.

What is Kush Cannabis?

Kush cannabis refers to the family of cannabis strains. The name comes from its geographical origin in the Hindu Kush mountains. However, today's Kush cannabis is grown in many places around the world. Through selective breeding and adaptation of different plants, there are now a large number of different varieties with different profiles of aroma, flavour and effect. However, Kush strains share a number of similarities. (1)

Kush plants often have dense, compact buds with a deep green colour. They have orange to amber hairs (pistils) and a high density of trichomes that give the buds a frosty and sticky appearance. Not only because of its geographical origin, but also because of its (more) sedative effect, Kush cannabis is attributed to indica varieties. However, there are also many hybrids among Kush strains that have both sativa and indica characteristics. If in doubt, we recommend looking at the specific effect profile of the strain in question. (2)

A wide range of flavour nuances are associated with the different varieties of Kush. These include varieties with earthy, woody, spicy, citrus, hash (slightly bitter to pungent), sweet or fuel (petrol and diesel-like) flavour profiles. In addition, combinations of individual flavours are often found. (3)

4 Effects of Cannabis Kush

Kush strains are known for their relaxing and calming effects. (4) Kush cannabis seems to have a beneficial effect, especially when it comes to sleep problems. (5) In addition, Kush cannabis has pain-relieving properties and can therefore be used to treat chronic pain and muscle spasms, among other things.

  1. Calming effect

  2. Physical relaxation

  3. Easier falling asleep, higher quality sleep

  4. Pain-relieving properties

Because of their sedative effects, Kush strains have a reputation as so-called "couch relaxers."(7) To the extent that this may be true of some varieties, they are destined for medical use in the evening or for the treatment of multiple physical ailments.

Which Kush tribe is the strongest?

The determining factor for the potency of Kush strains is the THC content. The THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content can vary depending on the specific genetics and type of cultivation. In general, however, Kush strains are known for their very high THC content. However, the exact percentage varies from variety to variety. Many Kush strains have THC contents of 15 to 30 percent. We've compiled a few Kush strains that are considered particularly potent. Please note, however, that the strength of the effect may depend on your individual tolerance and sometimes on personal preferences and external factors.

  • Hindu Kush: The original Kush strain, known for its earthy and nutty aroma.
  • OG Kush: A popular and potent strain prized for its relaxing effects and pine flavor.
  • Bubba Kush: A hybrid strain believed to be closely related to OG Kush. It has strong sedative properties.
  • Master Kush: A balanced hybrid with a sweet and earthy taste often used for relaxation and pain relief.
  • Skywalker OG: An indica-dominant hybrid strain known for its relaxing yet euphoric effects.
  • Purple Kush: A pure indica strain known for its bright purple coloration and relaxing effects.
  • Afghan Kush: Another pure indica strain associated with strong sedative properties.
  • Lemon Kush: Hybrid variety with the eponymous citrus aroma and a balanced mix of typical sativa and indica effects.
  • Koscher Kush: A powerful indica strain with a strong body and earthy flavour.
  • Platinum Kush: Indica dominant strain known for its dense, resinous buds and relaxing effects.

Notes on the dosage of Cannabis Kush

Cannabis Kush is known for its powerful effects. The exact dosage should therefore only be determined after consultation with the attending physician. To optimize of therapeutic benefit a low starting dose is recommended. This should be gradually increased to achieve the desired effect.(9)

If you already have experience of consuming medicinal cannabis, you can compare the THC content of the Kush strain in question with cannabis strains you are familiar with to gauge the strength of the effect. Keep in mind, however, that the THC content is not solely responsible for the effects of cannabis.

If the desired effect is no longer achieved at the same dosage, you may have built up a tolerance. In this case, a higher dose may be necessary. However, make sure you consume a moderate amount and consult your doctor if in doubt. If your health permits, you can also temporarily reduce your consumption to lower your tolerance again. (11)

What are the possible risks and side effects of Kush?

There is no evidence of specific side effects of Cannabis Kush. In general, cannabis consumption may be associated with the following side effects, depending on individual tolerance and type of consumption. Note that tolerance is also related to dosage. Slow dosing may reduce side effects (9).

Impaired coordination and perception: due to the psychoactive effects of THC, you should generally avoid driving or operating heavy machinery after consumption (12).

Dry mouth and eyes: staying hydrated and using eye drops can help reduce dryness and irritation caused by cannabis use.

Anxiety and paranoia: In high doses and with individual susceptibility, cannabis can have a negative impact on the psyche.

Lung irritation: you can prevent respiratory exposure by vaping or using alternative methods of consumption (tinctures, capsules, ointments, edibles) (13).

Is the Kush tribe legal?

Kush strains are approved for medical use. However, you need a doctor's prescription to legally buy Kush cannabis. All doctors (except dentists and veterinarians) can write a prescription for medical cannabis if they consider cannabis treatment medically appropriate. In exceptional cases, health insurance companies will cover the cost of cannabis therapy. In most cases, however, the prescription is issued as a private prescription. In this case, patients pay the cost themselves (around €5-15 per gram (14) For more information, see our article How to become a prescription cannabis patient).
